Geology:
Salisbury is home to the highest elevation in Connecticut on the south shoulder of Mt. Frisell at 2,380 feet and also the highest peak on Bear Mt. At 2,316 feet. It is difficult to conceive that the Taconic hills were once as high as parts of the highest mountains on earth, but millions of years ago they were…

Native Americans:
As the glaciers began to retreat northward the land gradually, over thousands of years, began to support plants and animals that could provide a habitat for the first Paleo-Indians about 10,500 year ago. The first of these people were mostly summer visitors who retreated south during the winters. Paleo campsites have been found as close as Glastonbury on the Connecticut River….

Colonial Period: 1720 to 1775
The first settlers in Salisbury were five Dutch families that had come over from eastern New York state. They were probably following an Indian trail that went from the area of Wassaic to Salisbury in search of good farm land.  These families developed farms, bought land from and lived peacefully with, the Native Americans in the area.

Revolutionary War Period: 1775 to 1783
Salisbury played a very large part in the Revolutionary War.  Its most notable contribution were the cannon, ammunition, and other vital iron products made at the Salistury furnace.  In 1768 Richard Smith bought a controlling interest in the furnace. His home was part of the present day Holley-Williams house.

Revolution to the Civil War: 1783 to 1860
After the war, in the taverns and around the watering troughs, the debate raged as to how much power the central government should have.  Some things never change!  This was finally solved at the time by the ratification of the Constitution followed by the Bill of Rights.
